Beekeeping is the act of maintaining honey bee colonies usually in manmade hives. Beekeepers keep hives to collect honey and other products, such as propolis and pollen. Depictions have been found of humans collecting honey from wild bees date back to 10,000 years ago.

About me

My name is Carol Malin, I live in Oxfordshire and I started beekeeping over 14 years ago starting with just one hive.  I had built up to over 30 hives that I tended to on a regular basis. I love how fascinating these insects are,  just to see the waggle dance or bees passing nectar to each other is great.

How did you get into beekeeping?

About 14 years ago I attended an open day at the local beekeeping association just to see what it was involved in looking after a hive of bees. You realise just how important insects are to our environment. I thought I'd give it a go myself and went on the beekeeping course and I found it utterly fascinating. What you do learn after a few years is that the bees have not read the books. Each year is different from the last.

I have gained a lot of knowledge and expertise with beekeeping over the years.  I love to teach other people what I have learnt. I now produce and sell my own honey as well as beeswax and candles.

Jewellery and Leather.

I started making silver jewellery about 4 years ago, I went on a one day course to make a silver ring with a cabochon setting for a rose cut citrine. I loved it so started teaching myself (with the help of youtube) to learn more. The leather work again is self taught, I love hand sewing the leather..
